So what did we learn last night? That Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees are excellent QBs? That the Saints and Packers can score points almost at will? That Donald Driver is in fact, still alive? So what did we learn last night? That Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees are excellent QB’s? That the Saints and Packers can score points almost at will? That Donald Driver is in fact, still alive? Silly rabbit, we already knew these things.

So really, what did we learn? It is Friday, are you sure you want to learn? Fine then, be that way. Education it is.

Remember all that harping on how you need to pay attention to your league’s rules and settings? In my longtime 14-team league, we award players points for return TD’s (6 pts) and return yardage (1 pt per 10 punt return yards, 1 pt per 25 kick return yards). It’s a PPR league. My point? Aaron Rodgers scored 26 points. Drew Brees scored 27.5 points. And DARREN SPROLES scored 32 points. Randall Cobb was no slouch with 22 points, and quite possibly will be the #1 waiver wire claim in the league this week. At the risk of sounding like your mother, let me repeat my self. KNOW YOUR LEAGUE RULES AND SETTINGS!

And “From The Desk of Captain Obvious” - It’s pry not a good idea to start a D/ST going against the Saints or the Packers. No matter how highly you drafted them. Might as well throw the Patriots on that list while you’re at it.

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS

  • Marques Colston was tied for the team high with 9 targets and he caught 6 passes for 81 yards. But he did not look sharp at all running his routes and appears to have little explosiveness at this point. As the game went on it seemed that Devery Henderson (also still alive) played a larger role while Colston’s role decreased. Colston did have a big catch for a first down late, but it’s time to temper your expectations for Colston. Think Derrick Mason. A bunch of catches but not a ton or yards or TD’s. Probably just a WR3 in standard leagues and a low-end WR2 in PPR leagues. INJURY UPDATE: COLSTON IS OUT AT LEAST 4 WEEKS WITH A BROKEN COLLAR-BONE.
  • Robert Meachem looked fantastic. He ran good routes, showed good hands and appeared to have the trust of Drew Brees. When Lance Moore returns, I would expect Meachem to still be the Saints WR you want. Moore, like Colston, will be a decent PPR WR. But Meachem has always had the skills and it seems like it’s all starting to come together for him.
  • Devery Henderson does this at least twice a season. I’m not even thinking about picking him up unless Lance Moore is out for an EXTENDED period of time.
  • Jimmy Graham didn’t have a monster game and wasn’t on the field as much as you would like. But he was targeted in the red zone, as expected. The fact that I’m nonplussed about 4 catches for 56 yards and a TD shows you how high the expectations are for Graham. He pry won’t finish as a top-5 TE, but should be a starting option in all leagues.
  • Jon Kasay hit both of his field goal attempts. He kicks in a dome, for the Saints high-powered offense. He’s got the job for at least another five weeks. No reason he WON’T be a top-10 kicker as long as he’s kicking for the Saints. And he should be on the waiver wire in almost all leagues.
  • Darren Sproles is better at the “Reggie Bush Role” than Reggie Bush was. He certainly got a bump from the return game and the absence of Lance Moore. But Sproles should be a borderline flex option most weeks in PPR leagues. And most likely a starter in leagues that award points for return yardage. Plan accordingly. But his upside is limited (he would never be the Saints featured back) so don’t cut pick up Sproles unless you have a roster spot to burn if you don’t plan on starting him.
  • Mark Ingram received 13 carries compared to 5 for Pierre Thomas. But Ingram didn’t look very spry and was stuffed cold on the last play of the game. Most of Ingram’s fantasy value is going to be tied to his ability to score TD’s. If he doesn’t score, odds are he wasn’t a good fantasy start. At least in PPR leagues, Thomas should do enough to remain a decent flex option when the match-up is right. Ingram could very well be the “Next Big Thing” at RB, but he’s not there yet. And the reports of the demise of Pierre Thomas have been greatly exaggerated.

GREEN BAY PACKERS

  • James Starks had 12 carries compared to Ryan Grant’s 9 carries. Both looked decent. Starks looked more explosive and manged to find the endzone. Grant was better in pass protection and even had a screen pass called for him. This game was a bit a poor barometer, as the Packers only accumulated 23 rushing attempts with RB’s. But it looks like this is a true committee with each player only being worth of flex consideration while the other is healthy. Have fun. Not to mention John Kuhn vultured a TD. Get used to that.
  • Jermichael Finley finished the game healthy. Surprisingly, he was only targeted four times. Perhaps the Saints had a good gameplan for containing him. Or maybe Aaron Rodgers has gotten over his “Finley Tunnel Vision” he has early last season. Either way, Finley should still be an elite TE. But maybe not the possible #1 TE we thought he could be.
  • Whether or not it was related to Finley’s targets, Greg Jennings had 7 catches for 89 yards and a TD on 8 targets. Many people (including yours truly) we worried about Jennings being able to come close to last years’ stats with Finley healthy. Through Week 1, it looks good. Jennings is locked in as a WR1 in all leagues.
  • Donald Driver actually saw 7 targets, but he’s just not able to do ANYTHING after the catch at this point in his career. He’ll be useful to Aaron Rodgers as a “move the chains” receiver. In fantasy, he’s just a bye week fill-in for owners in deeper PPR leagues.
  • Jordy Nelson looked phenomenal. He was targeted 8 times by Rodgers and was definitely a vertical receiving threat for the Packers. Considering the deterioration of Driver’s skills and the fact that James Jones was targeted once, Jordy Nelson is sitting pretty. We’re talking WR3 status, with WR2 upside in PPR leagues or leagues that award bonus points for long plays.
  • Randall Cobb is every bit the weapon he looked like in the preseason. Whether it was returning a kick to the crib from the back of the back of the endzone or catching a TD from Rodgers. Dude looked faster than everybody else on the field. In most fantasy leagues, he’s not going to be worth much as the Packers 4th or 5th WR. But he might be a starter in leagues that award points for return yardage. And he’s mosdef a player for owners in dynasty or keeper leagues to target.

And kindly don’t feel compelled to point out that I excluded Brees and Rodgers. They did EXACTLY what fantasy owners expected from them. So what’s worth mentioning? When you’re that good, you’re only worth talking about when you screw something up. Sad, but true.

I hope that everybody got off to a good start in their leagues. I will promise the proverbial cookie to any soul who can produce proof that they started Randall Cobb and Darren Sproles last night. And then you can take over for me, because you’re awesome(ly sick in the head)! Follow along on the Twitter if you like. Good luck this weekend, May The Kickers Be With You…..
