Holy expletive deleted! And that’s putting it kindly. Not even those geniuses in Vegas could figure out the total number of curse words uttered by fantasy owners. Both by the guy who started Eric Decker (5 catches, 113 yards and 2 TD’s) and the guy who started Mike Williams (South) (1 catch, -4 yards). And we haven’t even made it to Jamaal Charles (Torn ACL) or Antonio Gates (0 catches).

I don’t have any easy answers for you. Kurtis Blow really said it best. I had the 5th pick in my FFPC league. I knew about 10 days before the draft where I was picking. For the first nine days I was convinced I would take LeSean McCoy over Jamaal Charles. On the 10th day, the day before the draft, I decided to take Charles. The Eagles were having problems on the offensive line and I didn’t trust Andy Reid to run the ball consistently. Plus, what were the odds that McCoy could catch 70+ passes again? Fast forward to today and I pretty much know that I made a bad decision that could very well kill my fantasy team. But I really didn’t. I just caught a bad break. Maybe you did too. Yet, the show must go on.

This was one of the most off-the-wall fantasy weeks in history. You had fantasy studs who put up crazy numbers. You had studs who did absolutely nothing. Then you had players come out of nowhere to put up monster numbers. YOU HAVE NO CONTROL OVER THIS. You weren’t going to bench Chris Johnson for Willis McGahee. So stop beating yourself up. That’s step one. And if you got lucky and started Denarius Moore or Eric Decker because Dez Bryant was injured, good for you. Stop patting yourself on the back though, you got a bit lucky. Now take a deep breath. Probably take another deep breath. Ready?

JAMAAL CHARLES tore his ACL. The Chiefs haven’t confirmed it yet, but it’s all but a done deal. He will miss the rest of the season. No sugar-coating it here. You just have to deal with it and move on. So what do you do?

The Chiefs backfield is going to be some sort of 3-way running-back-by-committee (RBBC). Here are the committee members:

  1. DEXTER MCCLUSTER - He’s your #1 pick-up in PPR leagues. He might not get chances at the goal line, but he will dominate the work on passing downs. And given how bad the Chiefs look, they will probably be passing quite often.
  2. THOMAS JONES - He’s your pick-up in standard leagues. He should see the most carries, but it’s unknown how much he has left in the tank. He looked decent against the Lions, but they already had the game in hand. If you have the space, it might be worth picking Jones and McCluster up.
  3. LERON MCCLAIN - Now here’s your dark-horse. In deeper leagues (14+ teams) he might be the only one available. If he’s there in those formats, pick him up. He’s proven that he has running skills as well as being extremely efficient in short-yardage and goal line situations.

None of these players can replace Jamaal Charles. Realistically, all of these players together really can’t replace Charles. But they will try. These are now flex options at best. Temper you expectations. The Chiefs have the look of a team on the brink of imploding. They could be bad enough to almost have no fantasy value as a team. These players should be owned. But if one of them has a good week in Week 3, I’m selling as fast as I can.

Now the rest of the injuries from Sunday:

  • MILES AUSTIN - Austin had a phenomenal day with 9 catches for 143 yards and 3 TD’s. He also re-aggravated his hamstring injury. The early word is that he could be out until after the bye in Week 5. Not much you can do. Dez Bryant should be a monster if healthy, ditto Jason Witten. There’s probably not a good pick-up to be had here.
  • FELIX JONES - Separated his shoulder early in the game and did return to play. It looks like he might play through the injury. DeMarco Murray should be picked up in leagues with 12+ teams. Maybe grab Tashard Choice in deeper PPR leagues.
  • BEN ROETHLISBERGER - Appeared to suffer a bad knee injury at the end of the first half. But he was right back out there to start the second half. This looks like something he will just have to play through this season. No moves to be made here, but it’s certainly worth monitoring.
  • EDDIE ROYAL - Suffered a groin injury. It was a non-contact injury and it did not look good. While Royal isn’t really fantasy relevant, his absence is. Especially with Brandon Lloyd nicked up. Eric Decker should be owned in all leagues with 12+ teams. He’s got potential and now he’s also got opportunity.
  • MALCOM FLOYD - Floyd also suffered a groin injury. In theory if Floyd were to miss time, Patrick Crayton would see increased snaps. But Crayton was inactive with an injury in Week 2. An extended absence by Floyd could lead to crazy fantasy points for Vincent Jackson and Antonio Gates. You know, even more so than usual.
  • JORDAN SHIPLEY - Suffered a knee injury. Shipley hasn’t done much for the Bengals this season. But his injury could definitely help AJ Green. This also puts Jerome Simpson back on the radar in deeper leagues. Andy Dalton won’t get to face the Broncos secondary every week, but he doesn’t really look much worse than Carson Palmer did last year. AJ Green won’t do this every week, but the increased targets will certainly help.
  • AARON HERNANDEZ - Hernandez suffered an injury and missed part of the 4th quarter. It was also reported that he left the locker room limping. A Hernandez injury would vault Rob Gronkowski to top-5 TE status. Not to mention leading to increased targets for the other Patriots receivers. Given how the Patriots operate, don’t expect to hear too much about this until Friday.
  • TONY ROMO - The latest reports claim that Romo suffered two cracked ribs in the Cowboys overtime victory over the 49ers. Romo left game, but returned to carry the Cowboys to the win. This looks like an injury he will play through. But with Miles Austin, Dez Bryant and Felix Jones all nursing injuries, it’s going to get even tougher for Romo. Have another option ready for Weeks 3 and 4.
  • ARIAN FOSTER - There are some conflicting reports here. It was reported that Foster had re-injured his hamstring. Texans coach Gary Kubiak claimed that Foster was just tired. Then Foster said that he pulled himself from the game because he felt his hamstring “tightening up”. If he’s not already, Ben Tate should be owned in all leagues. Foster owners shouldn’t sell-low, but get ready to possible not have Foster for a week or two until he fully heals. And at that point, Tate might have earned himself at least a share of the carries. DO NOT PANIC, but be proactive. Foster owners should seek some added depth at RB if they don’t own Ben Tate.
  • MICHAEL VICK - Yeah, if you went to bed early, you might have missed this one. Vick suffered a concussion. Concussions are a tricky injury. Vick could be fine in a day, or he could miss months. Most likely it would just be a week or two. Now it gets interesting. Mike Kafka looked very good in relief of Vick. I’ve often maintained that while the Eagles might go to Vince Young halfway through a game, Kafka would be the starter if Vick went down for multiple games. If you’re in a deep league, Kafka is definitely worth a pick-up. If nothing else, you can try to trade him to Vick’s owner if he doesn’t have a solid backup QB. It’s worth a shot.

Those are the relevant injures from the games on Sunday. And it’s about as ugly as it reads. But this is what you signed up for. This IS fantasy football. That’s what makes it so exciting. You do your best, but at the end of the day, there’s a great deal of random chance involved. That’s why you want as much depth as possible early in the season. You have to reach the playoffs in order to win your league. One step at a time here.

For additional sympathy, Jamaal Charles owners (and I guess everybody else) can follow me on the Twitter. I feel your pain. Trust me.
