Dallas Cowboys – 18, Washington Redskins – 16
Tony Romo (255 yards, 0 TDs, 1 INT) courageously battled through a fractured rib and a freshly healed punctured lung to deflate
Rex Grossman (256 total yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) and the Redskins’ hopes of going up 3-0 for the season. Romo’s injury status wasn’t even the biggest issue, as Romo was thwarted more often by the lack of experience in his receiving corps and several shotgun snap gaffs by 2
ndyear center
Phil Costa. For Grossman, he seemed like his own worst enemy at the most inopportune times, throwing a costly interception that led to a Cowboys’ field goal and coughing up the ball on a strip sack by
Anthony Spencer to kill the Redskins’ final drive.
Jason Witten (6-60) continues to lead the Cowboys in receiving, even though the Redskins made a concerted effort to take away Romo’s favorite security blanket with constant tight coverage.
Dez Bryant (4-63) made a couple of nice plays, but overall didn’t look quite right and might still be bothered by that injured quad.
Laurent Robinson (3-49) also made a couple of good plays and actually looked a little like Miles Austin-lite while out there, and might get more playing time over
Kevin Ogletree (3-19) if Austin remains out.
Santana Moss (5-70) and
Jabar Gaffney (5-60) were the leading targets for Grossman, and even
Chris Cooley (4-41) showed up in the box score as he looks to put his early season knee woes behind him. Favorite TE sleeper
Fred Davis (1-23) had a quiet game to remind owners that the specter of Cooley is still there which could serve to limit Davis’ value going forward.
Who knew all
Felix Jones (14 car., 115 yards; 3 rec., 40 yards) needed was a separated shoulder to finally show that burst and power that he was displaying in training camp and preseason? Jones was sharp, ripping off runs of 29 and 40 yards on his way to rolling up 155 total yards and looking very much like a feature back (finally). Neither
DeMarco Murray (2 car., 6 yards) nor
Tashard Choice (7 car., 5 yards; 1 rec., 3 yards) made anyone think that even a banged up Jones isn’t still the best option in the Cowboys backfield.
The Redskins running game finally underwhelmed, as
Tim Hightower (14 car., 41 yards; 5 rec., 39 yards, 1 TD) didn’t get many chances to run, but was effective catching screen passes and scored the games’ only TD on a play-action pass on the goal line.
Roy Helu (5 car., 15 yards; 2 rec., 17 yards) got around one out of every three series, and has been steadily pushing for more playing time. This situation is definitely one to watch in the coming weeks.
