Using the waiver wire in fantasy football is rarely straightforward and simple. I mean, what fun would that be? Through the bye weeks, it gets even more complex. It's not always even about the players you are picking up. It's about who you're dropping, what the match-ups are and who you are playing against.
The waiver wire for Week 6 has been interesting. Three of the top claims are on a bye in Week 6; Tim Tebow, Jackie Battle and Doug Baldwin. Other than Tebow, these guys are not household names. None of these players has any professional track record to speak of. And they all play for below-average teams.
The real question is, what do we do with these players? First of all, you're picking them up if you can. There's some value to be had here, it's just a matter of figuring out what the correct value is.
TIM TEBOW
Haven't we had it up here with Tebow-mania yet? No matter what you think of his actual NFL prospects, his fantasy prospects are good. He should be owned in all leagues. Tebow's ability to run the football and score TDs on the ground gives him an edge that only a handful of other NFL QBs have.
Going forward, I like the fantasy prospects of Tim Tebow more than these players:
Of that group, the only QB I would hesitate to cut for Tebow is Matt Ryan. I like Tebow a touch more, but Ryan still has too much value to cut. Flacco and Freeman still have some value in deeper leagues, but neither has the upside that Tebow has.
Even if you don't like, want or trust Tebow, you should acquire him. Maybe you can trade him. If you can't trade him, you can at least prevent a team that needs a QB from improving. If Tebow fails, you can cut him and move on.
JACKIE BATTLE
Jackie Battle is a 28 year-old special teams player. He got a crack at the Chiefs starting RB job because Jamaal Charles got hurt, then Thomas Jones and Dexter McCluster proved ineffective. Battle showed against the Colts that he is the best overall RB the Chiefs have.
Let's do this "Let's Make a Pros & Cons List to Decide if He Should Be My Boyfriend" style for Jackie Battle.
PROS
CONS
At the end of the day it's about talent and opportunity. Less-talented RBs than Battle have succeeded in the NFL. The Chiefs might be willing to give Battle 20 carries a game. That means no matter how bad his team is or how bad their schedule is, you have to pick him up.
Here are a few players that I would drop or trade to acquire Battle:
It's doubtful that Battle could turn into a fantasy stud. But with 20 carries a game, he could turn into a solid RB2. That's a guy that you can start most weeks and expect solid production. That's nothing fancy but he could get it done. Don't expect many big games, but Battle could total around 100 yards from scrimmage per game with the occasional TD.
DOUG BALDWIN
Kind of hard to believe that we're talking about a undrafted rookie WR from Standford playing for the Seahawks, right? This wouldn't seem to pass the "Sniff Test", but there are also reasons that Baldwin could be for real (as a fantasy option).
FOR REAL
DOESN'T PASS THE "SNIFF TEST"
This is really going to come down to what you believe about the Seahawks and their other players. Personally, I don't think Sidney Rice is anything special. Also I do not believe any of the other WRs are above replacement-level (average). That means there should be an opportunity for somebody to step up and become a consistent option in the passing game.
At this point of the season, you have to start taking some chances. I can't think of many bigger chances to take than taking a shot with a Seahawks WR. But crazy stuff has happened and continues to happen. Have you seen the Bills, Raiders or 49ers lately?
So here are some players that I would drop/trade in favor of Doug Baldwin
What's Baldwin's ultimate upside? Probably just a solid WR2 in PPR leagues. But Baldwin has no more issues than any player on this list does. And you've already taken a chance on those players, so why not give the new guy a try?
