Ah, the AFC South, once Peyton Manning's personal division, well at least until this season. With Manning still receovering from surgery and not yet placed on IR. The Houston Texans could not have asked for anything better than this. A hurt Peyton, two horrible teams who drafted rookie quarterbacks. This really is a perfect storm. With all the talks of Houston cleaning house and not being able to get into the playoffs, a golden opportunity has been bestowed upon them. This weekend the division leading Houston Texans (4-3) take on the surprising (and possibly uprising) Jacksonville Jaguars (2-5). Here are the three keys to the game.
1. Can Jacksonville play like they did on MNF?
I can honestly say watching Jacksonville and Baltimore was a horrible game (still not the worst of the week thank you Cleveland and Seattle, I thought it was Sleepless in Seattle, not Fall Asleep in Seattle) in which the Jags won 12 - 7, not a convincing win by any means, but in prime time baby that means something. If the defense that stopped Joe Flacco and Ray Rice can stop Matt Schaub and Arian Foster, then the whole division could end up in Jacksonville's paws. Now Granted that Baltimore gave Rice the ball only eight times, it still was not the most impressive running.
2. Could Houston's offense get any better?
After putting up 41 points, I would say probably not. However, Andre Johnson might just be back for this game. Johnson, who had been out since week four returned to practice Wednesday and according to head coach Gary Kubiak "went the whole thing." Now that is just scary. Schuab has been good these past couple of weeks, but once you factor Johnson back into the offense, it becomes downright scary, what some Indianapolis fans would describe as "New Orleans' scary."
3. Fantasy Studs
Arian Foster vs Maurice Jones-Drew. Need I say more? Probably not, but I will. Houston comes into the game averaging 139.9 yards per game right now, which is fifth best in the league right now, going against Jacksonvilles' defense which is only giving up an average of 103.4 yards per game, which is tenth best in the game. It will be a long day for Foster, perhaps the Texans should weaken the defense first with a few runs up the middle with Ben Tate, then let Foster do his work. Now on the flip side of that, Houston is giving up 99.7 yards per game on defense to opposing rushers (seventh in the NFL) against a Pro Bowler Maurice Jones-Drew. The Jaguars are averaging exactly 124 yards per game (tenth in the NFL) so if Jones-Drew can get some holes, he will make the game a lot easier on rookie Blaine Gabbert.
Also in another AFC South game, the Tennesse Titans (3-3) are playing the Indianapolis Colts (0-7), so either the Texans or the Titans will have the AFC South lead next week depending on how they fare this weekend.
