San Diego Chargers – 20, Kansas City Chiefs – 23
Once again,
Philip Rivers (370 total yards, 0 TDs, 2 INTs) mostly looked out of sync with the rest of the offense, as the Chargers got close to a comeback win on the road but were stymied by poor play and bad luck for the second week in a row.
Matt Cassel (275 total yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs) looked good early on, throwing for a quick TD and 100 yards in the first quarter, but quickly leveled out and ended the night with only 260 yards passing total in a game the included overtime.
Malcom Floyd (5-107) registered his second 100 yard receiving game of the year, while
Vincent Jackson (3-49) was mostly bottled up by Brandon Flowers, who has played pretty well thus far this season.
Antonio Gates (4-73) made it through another game relatively unscathed; but it just feels like we’re waiting for the other shoe (or foot, as it is) to drop, doesn’t it?
With only a couple of games under his belt,
Jonathan Baldwin (5-82, 1 TD) is starting to look like the first round talent at wide receiver the Chiefs thought they were drafting back in April. He looked dominant at times, but did have a few drops; all in all, his stock is trending up.
Dwayne Bowe (4-62) played second fiddle this night, but made a couple of timely catches down the stretch at the end of the game, as did
Steve Breaston (3-42).
With no Mike Tolbert,
Ryan Mathews (13 car., 57 yards; 6 rec., 55 yards) had the running duties pretty much all to himself, until he tweaked his groin in the second half.
Curtis Brinkley (10 car., 43 yards, 1 TD; 3 rec., 24 yards) played most of the 4
thquarter, and even scored a late TD. If Mathews ends up missing time, Brinkley would be a viable waiver wire add with Tolbert nursing an injury of his own.
With each passing game
Jackie Battle (19 car., 70 yards, 1 TD) more firmly entrenches himself as the Chiefs’ #1 running back, as he ended up with the vast majority of carries. Not only did he almost double what the other RBs on the team got in carries, but he also outgained them 70 to 10. Battle is a safe play as the feature back, but until they start giving him around 25 touches a game, another 100 yard outing might be hard to come by.
