February 01 11:01 AM The Chicago Bears have announced the hiring of Mike Martz as their new offensive coordinator. The Martz hire comes 27 days after Ron Turner was fired as the Bears OC; and general manager Jerry Angelo made it clear that the offense will need to work with the players they currently have. "Our roster is pretty well set," Angelo told the Chicago Tribune. "We don't have the first two picks in the draft. Free agency potentially will be very limited. It's not like we won't look for players like we do every year, but we're not going into this thinking we have to have an overhaul with our offense. I spoke with Mike and went over the roster as did Lovie and gave him my perception of our roster, and I feel it's applicable with his philosophy. I feel like the nucleus of what he needs to make his offense work (is here)." Read more Fantasy Spin:
It's hard to imagine that Martz will be able to turn this Bears offense into anything resembling "The Greatest Show on Turf" from his days in St. Louis. The key will obviously be how well he is able to extract talent out of Jay Cutler in his pass-happy scheme. Martz's arrival is probably good news for wide receivers like Devin Hester, Johnny Knox, and Devin Aromashodu. However, Greg Olsen's fantasy value takes a hit because tight ends are not featured in Martz's offense. |
