Smith seeks out opinions on shoulder

February 04 06:41 PM

According to Detroit Lions' beat writer Tom Kowalski (citing a "league source"), running back Kevin Smith is actively seeking further medical opinions on the injured left shoulder that was initially expected to require surgery this offseason. Reportedly, Smith is now considering avoiding a surgical procedure, and instead rehabilitating the injury through physical therapy.

Fantasy Spin:
Regardless of what happens with the shoulder, Smith has bigger rehab fish to fry this offseason, coming off anterior cruciate ligament surgery in December. He is actually suffering from injuries in both shoulders, as well, but only the left was considered problematic enough to warrant going under the knife. It now looks like Smith may avoid a procedure on that shoulder, but he is still almost certain to find himself on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list this summer because of the knee. Though Smith has shown flashes in his first two years of being an every down NFL back, he has not truly seized the reins that the franchise was so quick to offer him. Look for the Lions to acquire a player at the position in the offseason (either through free agency or the draft) that can not only fill in early in the season as Smith heals, but also push him for the lead sled-dog position going forward.
